Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

At St Hugh of Lincoln Catholic Primary School, we teach Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) as a whole-school approach that underpins children's personal development and supports their capacity to learn and flourish. Through our RSHE curriculum, we aim to promote emotional wellbeing, resilience and a clear understanding of the importance of both physical and mental health. Rooted in our Catholic faith and inspired by the example of St Hugh of Lincoln, our RSHE curriculum is delivered through Life to the Full Plus, a programme approved by our Diocese and rooted in the teaching and wisdom of the Catholic Church. Through this programme, we promote a virtuous culture that is reinforced through Gospel-rooted assemblies, prayer, Celebration of the Word and daily school life. We seek to nurture children who are spiritually, morally, socially and culturally aware; who demonstrate respect, compassion and dignity towards themselves and others; and who are prepared for the next stage of their education and future adult life. We want every child to understand that they are uniquely created and loved by God, and that their relationships should reflect God's call to love, serve and care for others. Our curriculum supports the delivery of the Personal Development and Behaviour and Attitudes aspects of the Ofsted Inspection Framework, whilst also fulfilling our safeguarding responsibilities, equality duties, British Values and opportunities for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. We strive to equip children with the knowledge, skills and virtues required to make informed choices, build healthy relationships, keep themselves safe and contribute positively to society.

At St Hugh of Lincoln Catholic Primary School, RSHE is delivered through Life to the Full Plus by Ten:Ten Resources. The programme follows a spiral curriculum model, enabling children to revisit key themes throughout their primary education and deepen their understanding as they mature.
The programme is built around three core modules: Created and Loved by GodThis module helps children to develop a positive understanding of themselves as unique individuals made in the image and likeness of God. Children learn to value themselves and others, celebrate similarities and differences and develop a healthy appreciation of their bodies as gifts from God. As pupils progress through the school, they learn about emotions, self-worth, personal responsibility and the physical and emotional changes associated with growth and puberty. In Upper Key Stage Two, children develop an age-appropriate understanding of human development, reproduction and God's plan for new life within loving relationships. Created to Love OthersThis module helps children understand the importance of healthy relationships and their call to love others as God loves us. Children learn about family life, friendships, respect, kindness, trust, forgiveness and reconciliation. As they move through the school, pupils learn strategies for managing conflict, recognising and responding to bullying, resisting peer pressure, understanding consent in age-appropriate ways and developing safe behaviours both online and offline. Children are taught how to recognise abuse and how to seek help from trusted adults when needed. Created to Live in CommunityThis module explores how we are called to live as members of God's family and contribute to the Common Good. Children learn about belonging, service, responsibility, Catholic Social Teaching and their role within local, national and global communities. Through scripture, stories and discussion, children develop an understanding of the Trinity as the perfect model of loving relationships and are encouraged to live out Gospel Values through service, dialogue and care for others. The programme is underpinned by ten key principles of Catholic RSHE:
RSHE lessons are taught weekly by class teachers and are enriched through links with Religious Education, Science, Computing and the wider curriculum. Learning is delivered through scripture, storytelling, discussion, videos, pupil reflection and real-life scenarios. Teachers use effective questioning, observation and discussion to assess understanding and inform future learning. Our commitment to wellbeing is further strengthened through:
Assemblies, Celebration of the Word, awareness days and wider school events reinforce key RSHE themes and support children in applying their learning to everyday life.

Through our RSHE curriculum, children develop the knowledge, understanding and virtues needed to live healthy, safe, productive, responsible and balanced lives. They become increasingly confident, resilient and reflective learners who are able to build positive relationships, make informed decisions and contribute positively to their communities. The impact of our curriculum is evident through pupil voice, children's work, classroom discussions, pastoral outcomes, behaviour, attitudes to learning and curriculum monitoring. As a result of our RSHE provision, we expect to see:
By the time pupils leave St Hugh of Lincoln Catholic Primary School, they will understand that they are loved by God, valued by others and capable of making a positive difference in the world.
