Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching is based on the belief that God has a plan for creation, a plan to build his kingdom of peace, love and justice.

It holds that God has a special plan for every single one of us, whoever we are. Our part in this plan isn’t just limited to things ‘spiritual’, or times when we do “religious things.” It involves every aspect of our lives, from the things we pray about, to how we live as a responsible global citizen.

Our part in this story is a kind-of vocation for the common good, a call to treat everyone as our brothers and sisters. It is something that we all share.

The Catholic Church has seven principles of social teaching that we share with our children through all that we do, through the curriculum, special events and activity and through our ordinary actions in school.

Catholic Social Teaching underpins the essence of our daily school life. As members of the Catholic Church, we are all called upon to preserve the dignity of all human beings, to care for creation, and to reach out to our sisters and brothers in need.

It is vital that our children can articulate the connection between Jesus' teaching and doing good deeds. We use the CAFOD Catholic Social Teaching resources and the animal mascots to support the children’s understanding of principles.

We have chosen three of these principles as a focus for our good deeds each term.

In the Autumn Term we are thinking of everyone – The Common Good

In the Spring Term we are being peacemakers – Promoting Peace

In the Summer Term we are caring for God’s gifts - Stewardship

We hold the belief that we share the role of educators of the faith with the parents of our pupils and we strive to keep them fully informed of what their child is learning at school and to support them in what they can do at home to further their child's understanding of the faith. Parents and members of the wider community are welcomed to assemblies, Masses and other liturgies throughout the year.

Supporting Others

At St Hugh’s we learn how important it is to help, support and care for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. We enjoy supporting charities locally, nationally and internationally as well as being fully involved in our local community through work with our parish.  We talk to the children often about the idea of service and how they can serve others to make the world a better place.

We have recently supported the following charities:

  • Mission
  • CAFOD
  • Woking food bank
  • Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
  • Beelieve Foundation
  • Sam Beare and Woking Hospice
  • The Swan Sanctuary
  • The World Wildlife Fund

Laudato si’ – Care for our Common Home

We listen to and act upon the message of the Pope in his encyclical, calling for us all to care for our common home.  We have an elected Eco Council who plan and lead assemblies on environmental awareness and who bring eco initiatives to the school.  Our children are passionate about their role in looking after our planet and some have taken it upon themselves to raise money for charities such as the WWF or introduce a stationery-recycling scheme.  We have also developed our school grounds to attract wildlife and have created a wonderful woodland wildlife garden to help develop a love of the outdoors and nature.

The children at St Hugh of Lincoln School took part in a meaningful Charity Walk as part of The Big Lent Walk, organised by CAFOD. It was an inspiring event filled with energy, enthusiasm, and a shared commitment to making a difference. By participating, the children helped raise vital funds for CAFOD, which will continue its important work in fighting global poverty. These funds will support CAFOD’s efforts to bring real, lasting change to communities overseas through expert local partners.
