Physical Education

"In faith and love, we learn and grow."

Intent

Our intent at St Hugh of Lincoln, is to provide every child with a variety of experiences within physical education and sport. Our school values and Catholic faith is at the heart of everything we do, stimulating religious growth and development, together with academic and social progress.  As well as promoting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and British Values. Through our curriculum, extra-curricular clubs and active opportunities, we aim to promote positive attitudes, development of physical skills and a love for being active and having fun. We want our pupils to use the sporting culture of our county to promote and learn about their long-term health and well-being, respect diversity, co-operate with one another and appreciate what they have. We believe physical education provides the children with confidence, resilience and instilling sporting attitudes.

Implementation

During PE lessons children follow a curriculum that aims to equip them with the essential abilities to realise their potential, enjoy a long-term and varied participation in physical activity and sport. The children will use their broad range of skills to perform more complex movements and tasks .As well as creating an understanding that practice can improve their skills. Our teaching and learning focuses on the main building blocks for every sporting action, gross and fine motor skills, spatial awareness and thinking skills. The long term plan sets out the PE units which are taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are met. We cover the national curriculum themes of athletics, dance, gymnastics, swimming, OAA and games (net &wall, invasion and striking & fielding) to ensure all children develop appreciation of their own strengths and weaknesses. The children receive their allocated 2 hours curriculum time every week. This is taught by specialist PE coaches involving a starter, progressive activities and a cool down. Throughout every lesson there is always opportunities for extending and challenging children’s skills as well as providing specific support for others.

We value the opportunities that children are given to participate in a growing range of lunchtime and after school activities, clubs and teams as well as their PE curriculum. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities after school. Additionally, Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are enjoyed by the children.

Staff and children have attended the Active Surrey Courses. Each year a small group of Year 5 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time clubs. The children build and learn more about our key values such as respect, responsibility, aspiration & achievement for themselves and others. Sport is celebrated through successful school teams, our house captains help at Sports day and with any other Sporting activities.

Impact

We also recognise that PE in our school has a wider value and purpose.  We know that we are achieving our aims and values through our PE lessons:

  • The PE experience provides a broad and balanced curriculum in a stimulating environment.
  • The children develop a range of life skills and values that will be practised, developed and then used in game situations.
  • We create pupils who feel confident in risk taking, making decisions and solving problems.
  • We prepare children for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
  • We participate in events and show resilience to keep going when they find something particularly difficult.
  • The children understand the importance of physical activity in a wider context.
  • We believe that when children leave St Hugh’s they will;
  • Be confident in their ability to compete in physical challenges whether as an individual or part of a team.
  • Have a variety of experiences covering a wide spectrum of sporting disciplines.
  • Have a broad understanding of a range of sporting events and apply good decision making, tactical and strategically thinking in a range of situations.
  • Be able to co-operate as part of a team and solve a range of problems and challenges.
  • Be able to demonstrate a range of Fundamental British values as well as recognising the importance of fair play, honesty and respect for players.
