Personal, Social and Health Education

"In faith and love, we learn and grow."

Intent

At St Hugh, we teach Personal, Social, Health Education as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.

Within our programme, children are taught the  “Personal Development” and “Behaviour and Attitude” aspects required under the Ofsted Inspection Framework, as well as helping to deliver our school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties, the Government’s British Values agenda and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities.

Implementation

Personal, Social, Health Education planning for KS1 and KS2 is based-upon by the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme of work chosen because it offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through programme which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.

Jigsaw is allocated 30 minutes per week; 18 hours per year where children are taught the knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way.

As well as Jigsaw, children are taught how to use and apply the Zone of Regulation to regulate their emotions.

The internal curriculum is  enhanced and reinforced by:

  • All teaching and support staff are trained in Emotion Coaching, to model respectful language and behaviour when interacting with children. . We aim to ‘live’ what is learnt and apply it to everyday situations in the school community.
  • Social Skills, Lego Therapy groups, Rainbows, ELSA, Drawing and Talking. Therapy provision to support children where they are struggling with their mental health or wellbeing or struggling with friendships and social skills.
  • Children are offered emotional check ins at various points in the day to monitor their well-being.
  • Peer mediators help and support children who are struggling.
  • Praise and Reward Systems used consistently in every class.
  • Whole school Mental Health Days celebrated.
  • Regular parent workshops to help support parents managing wellbeing at home.

Impact

We want our children at St Hugh to be able to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives. To be sociable and positive learners.

The children’s learning  is evident through pupil voice, our school ethos, PSHE journals and monitoring by the curriculum leader.

By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, our PSHE curriculum will help to tackle barriers to learning and raise children’s aspirations.  By the time they leave our school, personal, social and health education (PSHE) enables our learners to have an understanding of how to be healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It helps them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and enables them to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Our curriculum allows pupils to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
