Pastoral Care
During school hours, class teachers are responsible for the pastoral (spiritual, academic, physical, emotional and social) care of the children in their charge. Parents are always welcome to make an appointment to discuss their child’s welfare with the teacher. Whenever possible the Headteacher too, will be available to discuss with parents the progress, welfare and future of their children.
Discipline
Although we encourage self-discipline in our children, we believe this is best achieved in a caring atmosphere where both teachers and pupils work in harmony with each other. To this end we have a ‘Behaviour Policy’ which is followed by the children. We like to give our children the opportunity to behave in a self-disciplined way. When home and school work in partnership, any difficulties can be quickly resolved. Anyone wishing to view the Behaviour Policy can obtain one through the School Office.
Kelso’s Choice
The school uses a resource called ‘Kelso’s Choice’ to teach children to recognise the difference between small problems that can be resolved by the children themselves, and larger problems which require the intervention of an adult. All classes receive lessons using Kelso’s Choice and Kelso’s Choices are displayed throughout the school.
Parental Concerns
It is our aim to provide the best possible service to parents and pupils. Nevertheless, it is inevitable that occasionally some parents will think that some aspect of the education service is not working as they would wish. As a first step, parents should discuss concerns with the class teacher. If not fully resolved, an appointment with the Headteacher should be made or the matter put in writing. At this stage, should the matter not be resolved, parents should write to the Chair of Governors raising their concerns. Should a parent be reluctant to approach the Headteacher, he/she can always write to the Chair of Governors to take up the matter with the Headteacher on the parent’s behalf. There are a number of possible courses of action open to those who may wish to make a complaint and the school can provide further details.
School Property
Pupils are expected to take care of exercise books, textbooks and other school property. They will therefore be expected to pay for loss of property and for careless or deliberate damage to books. This refers in particular to the reading books we encourage the children to bring home. The school provides rucksacks/ plastic book bags/ plastic wallets, which can be purchased from the school office. No book may be taken home without being in a wallet, which will protect it.
