Design & Technology

"In Faith and Love, We Learn and Grow."

At St Hugh of Lincoln we believe that art is an essential and fundamental part of children’s education.  Our children will be given the freedom to share and express their individual creativity by providing them the opportunities to develop their skills in a variety of ways.  We want to provide our children with a real life context for learning, we want to allow children to aspire to be more aware of the wider world by creating opportunities for them through Design Technology. Through the Design and Technology curriculum, children should be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real life purpose.  Where possible we will make links to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art.

Design and Technology skills and understanding are built into every lessons, following a practical and interactive process of designing and making.  Through revisiting and consolidating skills, our lesson plans and resources help children build on prior knowledge alongside introducing new skills, knowledge and challenge.  The revision and introduction of key vocabulary are built into each lesson.  We want out children learn to take risks, be reflective, innovative, enterprising and resilient.  Through the evaluation of past and present technology they can reflect upon the impact of Design Technology on everyday life and the wider world.  Through these lessons, we intend to inspire pupils and practitioners to develop a love of Design and Technology and see how it has helped shaped the ever-evolving technological world they live in.

  • As a school and in accordance with the National Curriculum’s Programme of Study, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday
  • tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

We want our children to continue to have an excellent attitude to learning and independent working.  Through designing and constant self and peer evaluating, our children will be able to work more collaboratively with each other.  Not only in Design and Technology but this skill will be transferable throughout the curriculum.  They will become responsible designers and makers who work efficiently, safely and ethically using a diverse range of materials and processes.  They will learn to manage risks to be able to manufacture products safely and hygienically.  We want them to have passion for the subject.  We want our children to know that every product that is available to them has gone through the same process that they would have done in the classroom (design, make and evaluate).
