Congratulations to two Year 6 pupils, Isobel and Krystal, who represented the school in a public speaking competition on Monday evening. The competition took place in St Dunstan’s Church hall and was organised by the Catenians. The two St Hugh’s candidates spoke very well and received many favourable comments from judges and from those in the audience. They were two of the youngest competitors, with the majority of the other children taking part coming from secondary schools. Well done to them both! The February edition of the Health and Well-Being Newsletter produced by Woking Borough Council is attached here. There are a number of items that may be of interest to parents and children, including information about this year’s Surrey Youth Games and about Easter and May half-term holiday activities for children. Fairtrade Fortnight at the school was rounded off with a cake sale. All the cakes were made using at least one Fairtrade ingredient. Thank you very much to the parents, children and staff who contributed cakes for the sale or who purchased them. A total of approximately £70 was raised.
Year 4 led the school in assembly this morning. They shared some of the work that they did during their recent themed week, on the subject of Mardi Gras. The parents, staff and pupils enjoyed watching their dancing and admired their masks and necklaces. The children reflected on the importance of meals, and the special times that they give us with our families. Thank you to the children and the Year 4 staff for working so hard to share so much with the rest of the school this morning.
Two school nurses visited the school this morning to work with each Key Stage 2 class. The subject of the work was the importance of hand washing. We have recently installed some new soap dispensers in all of the pupil hand washing areas in the school. The nurses talked about the way that germs can be spread through poor hand hygiene, and the children were able to put their hands inside a special machine to show up how clean (or otherwise) their hands were. They learned about how nurses wash their hands really thoroughly - using the new soap dispensers should make it much easier for the children to do this. 12 children from Year 1 represented the school in the second ‘Huff and Puff’ festival of the year. The children participated in a range of different sporting activities, together with children from a number of other local primary schools. They all had a great time and showed lots of the skills that they have learned and practised during the Huff and Puff activities they do at lunchtime with the help of Year 6 buddies. Thank you to Mrs Rose and Mrs Merchant for supervising the children, to the staff at St John the Baptist School who organised the event and to the staff at Woking High School for hosting it.
Children in Year 3 led the school in assembly this morning. The children focussed on work they had done during their ‘themed week’ last week, when they learned lots about clouds. They shared a lot of their knowledge, as well as poems they had written, and a wonderful musical composition to represent a thunderstorm. The children showed models of different types of clouds that they had made, and paintings they had produced showing their interpretation of heaven. Thank you to all the children, and to their teacher Miss Griffiths, for sharing such an interesting and thoughtful assembly.
16 children represented the school in a basketball tournament held at The Winston Churchill School this afternoon. The children did well in this Year 5/6 tournament - particularly as 15 of the 16 players were from Year 5! The 16 children were divided into two teams. Team A opened with a match against Hermitage, which was drawn 2-2, with the points for St Hugh’s being scored by Laura. Team A then played Pirbright B, losing 4-0, before winning their next match 4-0 against St Dunstan’s B. The baskets in that match were scored by Jacob and Harry. The A team then met very strong opposition in their final two matches, being beaten 6-0 by Beaufort and 4-0 by Bisley A. Unfortunately, the 4 points earned in the group were not quite enough for the team to progress to the semi-finals. Team B opened against Bisley B, who were a very good team and won 10-0. The next opposition were Ottershaw. In a tight match, St Hugh’s took the lead with a basket from Michael, before Ottershaw came back with two of their own to win 4-2. There were then further close matches with Pirbright A and Sythwood, before Team B finished with matches against New Haw and St Dunstan’s A. The team acquitted themseves very well, although, like Team A, they were not able to reach the semi-final stage. The children enjoyed their afternoon and represented the school well. Well done to them all. The teams were: A - Jacob, Harry, Ethan, Harry, Laura, Jasmine, Daniel, Finn. B - Michael, Oliver, Jamie, Victor, Roisin, Amy, Anurag, Stephen. Thank you to The Winston Churchill School for hosting the event, staff from Woking High School who organised it, and students from Woking High School who officiated. The school nurse was in school today to work with Year 6 children. The children were encouraged to think about healthy lifestyles and healthy choices, learning about the health dangers of smoking.
Children in Year 5 led the school in assembly. They led the school in a reflection on how special each of us, chosen by God, and chosen to be like God. Thank you to all the children in Year 5 for their thoughtful and prayerful liturgy. The ‘Celebrate Me’ board in the hall currently shows lots of reasons for children in Year 5 to be celebrating! |
