Fairtrade School group

St Hugh of Lincoln School is working towards becoming a Fairtrade School.

To achieve Fairtrade status, there are a number of steps the school needs to take. We need to be able to show that children in the school learn about Fairtrade issues, and we need to be able to show that wherever possible, Fairtrade products are used in school.

A Fairtrade School Steering Group has been set up to lead the school’s work in this area. Mrs Lewry is the Chairperson of the group. Mr George and Mrs Rose are also on the steering group. There are 11 children on the steering group: 1 from Reception class and each Key Stage 1 class, and 2 from each Key Stage 2 class.

Recent news

We are now in the middle of Fairtrade Fortnight. The Fairtrade School Steering Group led an assembly this morning. They reminded us of the importance of Fairtrade and we saw some examples of people whose lives have been made better as a result of Fairtrade.

Today is the day of the ‘big swap’. Many children have brought in a piece of Fairtrade food as an alternative to their normal snack or lunch - the total number of ‘swaps’ is being counted and will be submitted to the Fairtrade Foundation.

We will be holding a Fairtrade cake sale on 5 March. Please bake some cakes and bring them in to be sold after school on that day. The only requirement is that each cake must be made using at least one Fairtrade ingredient.

There are some links to recipes for cakes using Fairtrade ingredients here, here and here.

The sale was well supported by children and parents, many of whom enjoyed the opportunity to buy Christmas cards, Advent calendars, small gifts and wrapping paper, as well as the usual chocolates, tea, coffee and pasta.

Great news arrived just before the end of term with notification that the school’s application for Fairtrade School status has been successful!

St Hugh of Lincoln is now, officially, a Fairtrade School.

We will be planning more events and activities next year to keep the profile of Fairtrade high.

Congratulations to all those on the Fairtrade School steering group and all those who have supported them in achieving this recognition for the school.
