Extended schools initiative
St Hugh of Lincoln School belongs to the Woking Schools Confederation. The Confederation exists to help schools to work together to meet the expectations set out on the Government’s Extended Schools agenda.
The Confederation’s website can be accessed here.
The Government has set the expectation that by 2010 all schools will provide the ‘core offer’ of extended services. Schools are not expected to work alone to do this, and are not necessarily expected to provide all services on their own site. Where services are not provided on-site, schools will be expected to ‘signpost’ provision, so that parents know whereabouts in the local area that provision can be found.
The expectations in the Extended Schools agenda are that schools should provide access to:
- parenting support, including family learning;
- childcare from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, 48 weeks of the year;
- community access to facilities such as sports or ICT facilities, maximising their use;
- access to a varied menu of activities including study support, music and sports;
- swift identification of pupils with additional needs and easy access to targetted and specialist support services.
In connection with the first of the bullet points above, Surrey Parenting Education and Support (SPES) provides support for mothers and fathers and those in a parenting role such as carers, step-parents, foster-parents and grandparents, throughout Surrey. It encourages parents to enjoy bringing up children and young people and get the best out of family life.
The Surrey Family Information Service (FIS) is an internet, telephone and outreach service. It provides information, advice and assistance to parents of children and young people aged 0 to 19 years old (up to 25 years old for young people with special needs). Contact details can be found by following the link.
Further reading about the rationale behind Extended Schools and the composition of the ‘Core Offer’ can be found here.
