Year 6 (Tansy)
Class teacher: Mrs C Grace and Mrs J Widdicombe
Year 6 is a busy and exciting year. The children follow a full and balanced curriculum, in addition to being presented with many opportunities in recognition of their growing maturity and position as the oldest children in the school.
Amongst the topics children learn about are Britain since 1930, Rivers, Mountains, Drawing with perspective, Masks and Shelters.
In Year 6, all children are given responsibilities to help the teachers and other staff of the school, and to help in the development of their own maturity. These responsibilities include:
- Playground buddies;
- Prefects;
- Games captains;
- Technicians;
- Fruit monitors;
- Milk monitors.
Responsibilities rotate each term, so that over the course of the year, all children fulfil a number of different roles. At the start of each term there is a special Commissioning Service, where children are presented with badges and the rest of the children in the school are asked to pray for the Year 6 pupils.
Children in Year 6 fill the roles of House Captains and House Vice-Captains. In addition to collecting in housepoints before each Golden Assembly, House Captains and Vice-Captains are often ambassadors for the school, showing visitors around on open mornings, for example.
Children in Year 6 take part in a residential trip in the Summer term each year. This is held at the PGL centre at Boreatton Park, Shropshire. Throughout the year there are other trips organised, and visitors invited to the class, to support the class’ curriculum and to help the children prepare for becoming more independent as they grow older.
There are good links with St John the Baptist Secondary School, and other local secondary schools, to help the children prepare for their transition to their new school at the end of Year 6.
